chile volcanic ash delays Sydney flights

Volcanic ash from the eruption of Mt Puyehue Cordon Caulle volcano in Chile continues to cause flight disruptions to the Qantas network.
tens of thousands of people were stranded as airlines grounded flights, and now the ash has returned. The plume is said to be too low this time for airlines to fly under it. The ash cloud from Chile's Puyehue-Cordon Caulle volcano is circling the Earth for a second time.
Last week, some airlines, such as Virgin Australia, flew below and around the ash cloud, but this time they have been advised against doing so.

Tips for Carry-On baggage size and weight

Air travel is often a stressful exercise, but one of the easiest ways to reduce stress while traveling by air is to make your baggage choices carefully and select the best carry-on luggage possible.

Carry-on baggage is a small piece of luggage you take onboard the airplane with you. You are allowed one carry-on in addition to one personal item such as a laptop computer, purse, small backpack, briefcase, or camera case.
The size of carry-on luggage is essential because if the bag does not fit within the overhead bin, or below the seat in front of you it must be checked in. The luggage size most commonly accepted by airline carriers is 45 linear inches (22"x14"x9"). However, luggage size regulations depend on the airline carrier and should always be confirmed before embarking on a trip.

AmeriBag makes a great sack-type bag that is large enough to carry most items you would want accessible on an airplane, but is still small enough to allow a good amount of leg room below the seat in front of you.

Another important factor is the weight of carry-on luggage. Some carriers have a weight limit of 40 pounds. To avoid complications, go no greater than 10 pounds. This allows you to stow your carry-on luggage comfortably without exceeding the weight limit.

The design of your carry-on luggage can help make your trip more comfortable as well. Four-wheel spinner technology works best for maneuvering luggage, outer pockets and sleeves are an essential feature, and nylon coil self-mending zippers from YKK are preferred due to their strength.

Finally, choose durable carry-on luggage. Solid frames and tear-resistant ballistic nylons protect everything inside your luggage, and precisely engineered wheels and handles allow luggage handling with ease. PVC luggage frames are recommended, and for hard side bags, polycarbonate is preferred due to its sturdy, flexible, and lightweight qualities.

Luggage from makers such as American Tourister is not only lightweight and sturdy, but their design thoughtfully includes spinner wheels to allow 360-degree movement.

TSA will screen any "Carry-on" baggage that will fit through the x-ray machine; however, it is up to each individual air carrier as to whether the baggage fits the size restrictions for your flight. Please check with the air carrier prior to proceeding through the security checkpoints.

To celebrate, Spirit is offering $9 introductory fares* (each way based on round trip purchase) available today and tomorrow only at www.spirit.com.

"We commend Spirit Airlines for substantially increasing its U.S. travel destinations from O'Hare International Airport," said CDA Commissioner Rosemarie S. Andolino. "This added service to the Chicago market reflects the steady increase in air travel demand and is an important part of Mayor Rahm Emanuel's vision to bolster Chicago's leading position in the global aviation system."

"Chicago is Spirit's fourth destination from Boston Logan International Airport and their growth in flying here increases the choices customers have," said Ed Freni, Director of Aviation at Massport. "This is great news for Logan, because when airlines compete, consumers - whether they are traveling for business or leisure - win."

• Additional seating for post screening convenience
• New LCD flight message and safety monitors
• Expanded entrance and exits to and from security and boarding gate areas
• Three central offices for Transportation Security Administration personnel

Remodeling and expansion projects at the airport totaled $17.2 over the last three years to serve the needs of passengers for the next 20 years, including an expanded baggage claim area, a terminal remodel with streamlined ticket counter positions and electronic signage and messaging and a "Sense of Place" public art project featuring a giant Sequoia forest.
The opening of the security checkpoint marks the completion of a 3-year, $17.2 million Airport terminal remodel and expansion projects that include:

free wifi At Fresno Yosemite Airport

Passengers fly to Fresno Yosemite International Airport can now access the internet for FREE from their wireless communication devices.
“The overall cost to implement the free service is minimal when you consider the convenience and added value for our passengers,” Director of Aviation Russ Widmar stated. “As wireless connectivity becomes more mainstream equal access is important to the constituency we serve.”
The convenience of wireless typically comes with a high price tag. The airport previously had a paid-for-use wireless service, facilitated by an outside contractor. The pay network was not much of a success. Passengers were reluctant to pay for the service when they are in and out in less than two hours.

The use of existing hardware and open source software presented an opportunity for the Airport to offer wireless connectivity for FREE to passengers and guests with minimal costs for the bandwidth.
Fresno Yosemite International Airport ranks in the top ten out of 100 continental U.S. airports for on-time flight performance. According to information released by the U.S. Department of Transportation Air Travel Consumer Report for the month of December, Fresno Yosemite ranks Third in on-time arrival performance and Sixth for on-time departures.

Eight carriers currently offer Valley passengers approximately 42 daily departures from Fresno. Fresno Yosemite International is a municipally owned entity operating as a self-supporting enterprise. No City of Fresno general funds are used to operate Fresno Yosemite International or Fresno Chandler Executive Airport.

Marco Polo Club miles and Club sectors

Flying in eligible fare classes with Cathay Pacific, Dragonair or any of the oneworld alliance airlines earns you Club miles and Marco Polo Club sectors. The higher the fare class, the more Club miles and Club sectors you will earn.

What is the difference between Club miles and Club sectors?

CX Club miles and Club sectors are the fairest way to calculate your eligibility to top-tier status of The Marco Polo Club. They are automatically tracked for every qualifying flight. Either Club miles or Club sectors count towards renewal or upgrade, but not a combination of the two.
If you often fly long-haul for example, you are more likely to qualify through Club miles. If you undertake frequent short trips, then Club sectors are the best way for you to qualify for top-tier status.

How can I earn Club miles and Club sectors?

To earn Club miles and Club sectors, simply quote your membership number when booking a flight and present your membership card at check-in. Club miles and Club sectors are awarded to members only, and are credited based on the class that the member has flown. However, Club miles and Club sectors awarded are not affected by complimentary upgrades or involuntary downgrades.

CX refurbish The Wing lounge at HK airport

The opening of The Cabin at Hong Kong International Airport marks a step change in the airline’s lounge development in its hongkong hub. The 1,339-square-metre space has not only introduced a range of new features, including innovative seating and new food and beverage concepts, but also enables the airline to begin a revamp of its signature lounge in Hong Kong, The Wing. As The Cabin opened its doors to specially invited passengers on 30 September, before the official opening on 11 October, Head of Product Alex McGowan revealed that a plan is already in place to begin refurbishing The Wing. “We will begin work later this month – a phased refurbishment that will begin with Level 6. The complete programme, including Level 7 Business and First Class, is expected to take around 20 months,” says Alex. “This will put further pressure on lounge space at peak times, making our investment in The Cabin all the more timely and important.” Cathay Paci c passengers now have access to four lounges at HKIA and Alex says there is an ever-increasing demand for lounge space. “Our premium passengers really value the sanctuary of our lounges. Given that both frontend passenger numbers and toptier Marco Polo Club membership are growing, we need more lounge seating,” says Alex. “We planned the facilities in The Cabin as part of a portfolio of lounges, and we consider The Cabin to be ‘twinned’ with The Wing in a complementary way as they are only a short walk apart.” As a result, The Cabin doesn’t feature showers or the signature Cabanas, but “the refurbishment of The Wing will see a signi cant increase in the number of showers in First and Business Class,” says Alex. “This will ensure passengers departing from this part of the airport will be well catered for.” Also absent from The Cabin is the famous Noodle Bar, but again Alex says that this is part of the overall plan. “When we refurbish The Wing we plan to expand both the Noodle Bar and The Haven, so in planning our food and beverage approach for The Cabin we wanted to add new features that complement those already available,” he says.
The Cabin is the latest CX lounge at HKIA,the most striking is the Cathay Solus chair. This exclusive creation first glimpsed by passengers in the reception but also featured in the IT Zone and the Relaxing Zone – is a chair like no other, specically designed around the needs of individual passengers. “With its generous space, table, power socket, coat hook and transparent privacy screen, the Solus provides the ideal environment for passengers. It is designed to provide a private space to eat, drink, work on a laptop, make a phone call, read a paper or simply relax.” The chair, with its distinctive contoured white shell and red leather seating, was jointly created by Cathay Pacific and Foster + Partners . The Product team went through multiple rounds of trials with Marco Polo Club members – and the CX Rome team

The long, elegant space features floor-to-ceiling windows along its entire length, giving extensive views over the airport apron. Divided into five zones, all linked by a strip of plush red carpet, the IT Zone connects passengers to the world through iMacs, PCs and 20 Wi-Fi-enabled iPads pre-loaded with apps. For the hungry and thirsty, The Deli serves freshly prepared food to suit the international tastes of premium passengers, the Health Bar has Chinese herbal teas and juices, smoothies and alcoholic drinks

The ultra low cost carrier begin four non-stop flights per week between Latrobe’s Arnold Palmer Regional and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on February 12, 2011.
I am delighted that Spirit Airlines has chosen our airport to inaugurate its new services to Fort Lauderdale and later to Myrtle Beach,” said golf legend and Latrobe native Arnold Palmer, a long-timemember of the Westmoreland County Airport Authority which operates the airport that bears his name.“This is great news for air travelers from a wide area of Western Pennsylvania and gets us back intoregular airline service with a highly-regarded, low-cost carrier.”

flight rates hikes Third Time in a Month

The major U.S. airlines have imposed the third airfare hike in a month, , exceeding the total number of airfare hikes for all of last year, according to Rick Seaney, chief executive of Farecompare.com. As a result, consumers are paying, on average, $40 more than they were at the end of 2010.

Southwest Airlines jumped in late Friday evening and raised flight rates across most of its routes, Seaney says. Southwest rarely initiates a fare increase.

All the major lines have since matched including Delta, United and low-cost carrier Frontier.
Two days after Christmas, United Airlines and Continental Airlines imposed a $20 roundtrip "peak travel day" surcharge for most domestic routes. American then adopted the $20 fare increase on most flights and other major carriers matched the move.

"At this point, the carriers can pass through more gradual oil price increases to their customers," said Raymond Neidl, independent airline consultant. "Where the airlines would have a harder time adjusting [would be] a rapid increase in oil prices or high volatility due to unpredictable political developments."

An oil shock last hit carriers in 2008, when fuel prices spiked. But the recession stymied their success in increasing fares. So instead, they added ancillary fees for services that once came for free, like baggage check, curb-side check-in, pets, food and non-alcoholic drinks. Passengers griped but paid the fees anyway, resulting in billions of dollars in airline profits.

Airlines also cut capacity: They eliminated their least efficient flights to make sure that remaining flights were packed full so they wouldn't lose money on empty seats. On top of that, six carriers merged into three, lessening competition.

"The number of legacy carriers has declined by half in the last decade," said George Hoffer, transportation economist at University of Richmond in Virginia. "So it's much easier to coordinate price increases."

spirit airlines MYR to DCA $9 fares service

Spirit Airlines is introducing the next phase of expansion in the Grand Strand as it today announced non-stop service to five new cities from Myrtle Beach. To celebrate, Spirit is offering $9 introductory fares* (each way based on round trip purchase) available today and tomorrow only at www.spiritair.com.
We’re very pleased to see Spirit Airlines expand non-stop air service into Myrtle Beach International Airport while continuing to provide our visitors and residents with low fare options.”
With daily service out of Washington, D.C., there will be daily, non-stop flights to Myrtle Beach from every major city in the Northeast. We look forward to a record number of golf bags coming through Myrtle Beach International Airport next year.”

Spirit started regular scheduled service in Myrtle Beach in 1996 and currently offers on average 11 daily non-stop flights from Myrtle Beach to seven major destinations during the May through August season, including: Atlanta, Atlantic City, Boston, Chicago O’Hare, Detroit, New York LaGuardia and Fort Lauderdale, as well as connections to 25 additional cities in the U.S., Caribbean and Latin America.
