The A380’s arrival heralded greater traveller choice with the introduction of First Class cabins, alongside Business and Economy, on Emirates flights from Manchester, and also added much needed extra capacity.

"Since bringing the A380 to Manchester last September the route to Dubai has been one of Emirates strongest performers and we saw a full compliment of 517 in November so we know the traffic is there and the third daily service underlines the strength of this route and the importance of the Middle East to our longer term ambitions as an airport, said Andrew Harrison, Managing Director of Manchester Airport. Emirates operation in the North West has grown rapidly since it launched a twice-weekly service from Manchester in 1990."

Emirates SkyCargo begins e-freight flights

Emirates SkyCargo, the freight division of Emirates airline, has marked a milestone with its inaugural 100 per cent paperless freighter flight between Nairobi and Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

EK9952, which left Nairobi for Amsterdam on March 27th, became the first flight out of Nairobi with shipments processed electronically. The Boeing 747 freighter carried 103,884 tonnes of cut flowers to Amsterdam, the main market for Kenyan flowers.
E-freight is a collective cargo industry initiative facilitated by IATA, with the goal of removing all paper air waybills, as well as every other document and certificate, by the end of 2014.

it took great efforts from the teams in Nairobi and Amsterdam to make this flight happen so credit goes to all stakeholders from freight forwarders to ground handlers, shippers and customs authorities,he continued.

Ram Menen, Emirates Divisional Senior Vice President Cargo, said the adoption of the e-freight system would help the airline streamline processes, increase speed and reduce costs. IATA has estimated that about US$4.9 billion of industry savings could be generated and about 7,800 tonnes of paper documents eliminated annually using the e-freight corridor.

we totally support this initiative and firmly believe e-freight will become the industry standard and those who embrace the changes first will be best placed to reap those benefits which also includeimproved reliability, increased accuracy and, of course, bring environmental benefits, said Mr Menen.

The Nairobi e-freight freighter flight to Amsterdam follows a successful paperless flight from Mauritius in late 2010 and is an indication of Emiratesdetermination to meet the IATA 2014 target.

Fifty one of the 111 cities Emirates SkyCargo serves are e-freight compliant.

Emirates 152 -strong fleet including eight freighters (three Boeing 747-400Fs, two 747-400ERFs, one 747-400SF and two 777Fs) is one of the youngest in the skies and now serves 111 destinations in 66 countries on six continents.

Oman Air offer broadband internet on board its flights

Marking a pioneering milestone in the history of aviation, Oman Air became the first airline in the world to offer both mobile and broadband internet on board its flights. Offering in-flight connectivity is part of Oman Air’s ongoing drive to continuously enhance their customer travel experience and offer them innovative services commensurate with the latest technological developments.

The rates for the mobile and Internet connectivity are fixed as follows:

Passenger price plan for Internet on laptops (Wi-Fi), would be (pilot pricing) $29.95 for 26 MB per flight. Additional usage would be at $0.006 per KB, for the webmail (only body copy) would be at $9.95 and for the attachments it would be $.006 (per flight). For the Webchat the rate would be $4.95 for unlimited. (per flight)

Incorporating a cutting-edge most advanced technology that gives the instant convenience of connecting to the internet and mobile phone from the comfort of their seat, passengers travelling now onboard Oman Air’s A 330 flights will never be out of touch with the world even as they fly.

Barring the take off and landing time, passengers can use their mobile phones. As soon as the ‘no Mobile’ sign is off, the On-Air name will appear on the mobile screen as the network connection is obtained. The passengers can then receive and make calls, check their voice mail, send and receive text and multimedia messages, and access emails and websites, thus staying in touch during their flight as they would normally do on the ground.

When using their mobile phones on board, the services will be of a roaming nature, as on a foreign network. Users must then dial the full international numbers. Onboard communications will be charged by the home mobile service provider at international roaming rates, as is the case when one uses their mobile phone abroad.

With the Wi-Fi network access, logging onto the internet is like going online from any public Wi-Fi hotspot. The services that passengers can avail in this context are internet access, webmail to retrieve and send emails from a web-based email account, webchat to exchange instant messages.

Malaysia Airlines Allows ticket Booking On Facebook

Malaysia Airlines today further re-affirmed its leadership as a social media innovator with the launch of MHbuddy on Facebook. The application which can be accessed from the new Malaysia Airlines Facebook page, allows Facebook’s 500 million users to book and check-in for a flight while sharing their trip details with their social network.

Developed with Malaysia Airlines by SITA Lab, the research group of air transport IT provider SITA, MHbuddy is an application on Facebook Platform that allows passengers to book and check-in for a flight while sharing their trip details with their friends.

In 2010, Malaysia Airlines was been recognized for its active engagement on Social Media by winning the "Best Use of Social Media to Drive Revenue" award at the inaugural Simpliflying-Airline Business Social Media Excellence Awards for Airlines.

To book tickets on Malaysia Airlines via Facebook, go to http://facebook.com/malaysiaairlines

The introduction of MHbuddy really takes flight bookings to another level. Besides opening up another distribution channel for ticket sales, now, our customers can also experience amazing convenience. At the same time, they can stay connected with their friends,” he said.

“With MHbuddy, customers who book a flight are reminded of their friends who live at the destination they are headed for. They are also prompted if any of their friends on the Facebook network are also planning to travel to the same destination. If they like, they can also share their itinerary with friends,” said Amin.

In addition, MHbuddy users can check in via Facebook and select their seats. During seat selection, they will also be able to view the seats of their friends who are travelling on the same flight. This gives MHbuddy users a really easy and convenient way to connect with their friends when they travel on Malaysia Airlines, wherever they are.

Speaking at Innovation in Airline Distribution 2011 in London, Jim Peters, SITA Chief Technology Officer who heads up the SITA Lab, said: “SITA has always focused on technological innovation that the air transport industry and passengers want. This is another example of how we are enhancing the travel experience for passengers and giving them applications that are relevant to the way they live their lives. This initiative is a great step forward and gives Facebook users the opportunity to do what Facebook does best – keeping in touch and sharing life experiences with friends. SITA Lab is delighted to work with Malaysia Airlines to offer this ground-breaking service.”

Since its establishment three years ago, SITA Lab has delivered numerous innovations, several of which were developed with Malaysia Airlines including the world's first kiosks to sell airline tickets using the Apple iPad and an augmented reality application for the Apple iPhone to allow customers to pick up the best airline deals from nearby airports. In 2009, the airline launched the hugely popular MHmobile which enables travelers to book flights and access up to date travel information while on the move.

Japan Airlines increase free baggage allowance

Japan Airlines (JAL) has changed its baggage policy for international flights. Up until now, depending on the routing, baggage provisions on JAL’s international flights were determined by either a weight system or a piece system. Effective onboard flights on and after April 1, 2011, JAL will simplify its baggage policy and adopt the piece system for every international route and increase the free baggage allowance to bring customers greater convenience.

Compared with the current piece system, free baggage allowance provided to First Class and Executive Class customers will also increase from two to 3 check-in pieces per traveller. Moreover, customers travelling in all cabin classes can now carry larger luggage as JAL has also raised the permissible total dimension (a sum of the length, width and height) of each piecewhich in the current piece system policy, is limited to within 158cm but will from April 1 be increased to 203cm.

From April 1, 2011:
Summary of change to free baggage allowance per traveler:
Piece system applied to all international routes *3
Total number of pieces permitted 3 pieces
first class (max. weight/pc = 32kg) 3 pieces

business class (max. weight/pc = 32kg) 2 pieces

economy class (max. weight/pc = 23kg) 1 pieces

(max. weight/pc same as accompanying adult)

American Airlines AAdvantage Preferred Seating

american airlines Preferred seats are available to AAdvantage Executive Platinum®, AAdvantage Platinum®, AAdvantage Gold and AAirpass members. In addition, passengers who have tickets with a full fare economy Y or B booking code are eligible for preferred seats.

Preferred seats are those seats like the seats on the first row of a section where there is plenty of legroom due to no bulkhead or seat in front of you. Preferred seat can also be a seat in an exit row, or a seat where there is some other convenience, such as the first couple of rows in Economy Class because those rows naturally get to de-plane first, which allows you to beat 200+ pax to the immigration line.

Because we know AAdvantage elite status members prefer aisle and window seats near the front of the cabin when traveling in Economy Class, we try to set aside a number of these seats on every flight. It's easy to identify them on the AA.com seat map where they are designated as "preferred seats". You may request one of these preferred seats when you make your reservation. When you pre-reserve a seat, we will hold it for you until 30 minutes before departure.

american airlines elite members are also entitled to preferred seating on oneworld member airlines such as BA and cathay pacific.

AAdvantage systemwide upgrades

Systemwide upgrades are valid from most Economy Class or Business Class fares to the next class of service for travel worldwide on
American Airlines, American Eagle or AmericanConnection flights**. These upgrades are particularly valuable because they allow you to upgrade at the time of booking, if seats are available. You can use them for yourself or you can give them to anyone you choose.

AAdvantage Executive Platinum members receive eight free one-way systemwide upgrades upon qualification or re-qualification for your elite status level. These upgrades entitle you (or any passenger you designate) to confirmed upgrades to the next class of service at the time of booking when flying on most Business Class and Economy Class fares.

As an american airlines AAdvantage Platinum member, you have upgrade priority at the gate over
AAdvantage gold members) for any flights on which you are a confirmed passenger. Priority within your elite-status level will be determined based on the fare purchased and the date and time your upgrade was initially requested.
Request your upgrade when you book your trip. Simply call your AAdvantage Executive Platinum Service Desk and a representative will be happy to assist you. We will confirm your request immediately if seats are available.
american airlines recently expanded the types of fares that can be used with systemwide upgrades, including booking class in 'O' and 'Q'. In addition, you can also upgrade to international first class from discounted Business Class fares booked in 'I'.

Check your systemwide upgrade balance online at AA.com. Simply log in, go to "My Account" and select the "View My Upgrades" tab. Here, you'll find helpful information regarding the number of systemwide upgrades currently available for use, the date they were deposited and their associated expiration date. You will also be able to view the number of upgrades used or associated with future trips. In order to provide you with the most up-to-date details, your summary information will be updated on a daily basis. The date in the upper right-hand corner of the Systemwide Upgrade Summary section will show you the last date/time updates were made. Should you have any questions about your balance or usage details, contact the AAdvantage Desk at 1-800-882-8880 or your Elite Service Desk.

AAdvantage mileage will accrue for the class of service on which your fare is based when you are ticketed, not for the class of service flown.

How to get free fisrt class upgrade on AA

How do I request an upgrade? How can I improve my chances of getting confirmed?

free upgrades from Economy Class to the first class seats (sometimes referred to as 500-mile upgrades), are available to you on ALL purchased, published fares for domestic flights and between North America and Central America on American Airlines, American Eagle or AmericanConnection flights*.

Step 1: Make your request. Request your upgrade when you book your trip, whether you use AA.com, a travel agent or the American Airlines AAdvantage Executive Platinum® Service Desk.

Here's a Tip
The earlier you request your upgrade, the better. AAdvantage Executive Platinum members are given priority over all other members. Within each elite level, Full-Fare Economy Class tickets booked in Y or B are confirmed first, then all other fares, in the order in which the upgrade request was received.

Step 2: Wait for confirmation. We will begin processing AAdvantage Executive Platinum requests 100 hours before departure if upgrade seating is available on your requested flight. Once your upgrade is confirmed, we will notify you via email or voicemail.

Please Note
While you are waiting for your upgrade to be confirmed, you may notice that First or Business Class seats are available. That is because, we hold some First or Business Class seats for sale on the day of departure. Be assured, though, that as an
AAdvantage Executive Platinum member, you will be at the top of the list for upgrade requests.

Step 3: Standby at the airport. If your upgrade has not been confirmed by the time you check-in for your flight, you will be given the option to be added to the airport upgrade standby list. This will occur regardless of how you check-in, whether on AA.com, via your mobile device, or at the airport, using the Self-Service Check-In machine or with an agent. This option is not available via Curbside Check-In.

Here's a Tip
The date and time of your original upgrade request will also determine your position on the airport upgrade standby list. Of course, your AAdvantage Executive Platinum status puts you ahead of everyone else, but elite status being equal, your original request date and time will determine your priority.

Step 4: Go to the gate. The gate agents will process your upgrade requests within 30 minutes of departure. Watch the monitors or listen for your name to be called.

Step 5: Enjoy! Stretch out, relax or work — the extra space and comfort is yours to enjoy.

Traveling with a companion? Just follow the same steps defined above to upgrade your companion. If your companion is traveling on a fare booked in Y or B (excluding military/government fares), their upgrade will also be complimentary. For all other fares, one upgrade unit will be deducted from your account for every 500 miles flown.

How do I check my balance?

To check your 500-mile upgrade balance, login to AA.com and go to www.aa.com/MyAccount. Then select the "View My Upgrades" tab.

How can I get more?

AAdvantage Executive Platinum members get free and unlimited domestic first class upgrade. However, should you need to upgrade a companion, who is not traveling on a fare booked in Y or B (excluding military/government fares), you can purchase additional 500-mile upgrades in advance at a discounted price, through either AA.com or during check-in at the Self-Service Check-In machine. Regular pricing applies if purchased through an American Airlines representative.
